What it costs
ForkLeaf is free, all of it, with no tiers and no paid upgrade. Your notes sit in your own GitHub account, so there is no storage for anyone to charge you for — and a paywall would only ever stand between you and your own writing.
What you get
- Unlimited notes in your own repo
- Unlimited connected repositories
- Rich, split and source editing
- Mermaid diagram studio with a visual builder
- Markdown, HTML, Word and PDF export
- Offline-first with background sync
- Full commit history for every note
- Conflict resolution that shows both versions
- Works with any repo you can push to
What will always be free
A free tier is only meaningful if its boundaries are stated. These will not move behind a paywall:
- Unlimited notes, of unlimited length, in a repository you own.
- All three editing views, and every block type in the insert menu.
- Every Mermaid diagram type, the visual builder, and the source editor.
- Export to Markdown, PDF, HTML, Word, plain text and JSON.
- Offline editing and background sync.
- Conflict detection and resolution.
- Running the whole thing yourself — the source is Apache-2.0.
Scale is not a paywall here either: more repositories, search across all of them, and branch and pull-request workflows are part of the same free application.
How funding works
There is no billing. Nothing in ForkLeaf takes a payment, so there is no checkout, no card handling, and no subscription record anywhere — the Firestore entitlement document and the code that read it were removed along with the tiers.
The project is funded by GitHub Sponsors. Sponsoring grants no extra features, changes nothing in the app, and is not linked to your account in any way.
If ForkLeaf disappears
Your notes are already in your GitHub repository as plain Markdown, in a normal git history. They keep working with no ForkLeaf involved: clone the repo, open it in any editor, or point another tool at it. There is no export step, because there was never an import step.
The source is Apache-2.0 licensed and public, so nothing about that depends on this deployment continuing to exist.
